Have fun without breaking the bank in Dubai
Dubai is often seen as a luxury destination, but you don’t need to break the bank to have an amazing family holiday here. I’ve been to Dubai with my little ones, and trust me, there are plenty of fun things to do that won’t cost you a fortune. Here’s my list of the best free or budget-friendly activities that your kids will love.
1. Dubai Fountain Show
This is an absolute must-see! Every evening, right outside the Dubai Mall, the fountains put on a magical show, dancing to music. “I still remember the look of pure wonder on my toddler’s face when the fountains danced to ‘Let It Go’ from Frozen. She was clapping and twirling like she was part of the show!“.Best part? It’s completely free.
Pro tip: Get there early to grab a good spot near the bridge for the best views.
2. Visit the Beach
Dubai has some stunning public beaches that are perfect for kids. JBR Beach has a playground and shallow waters, while Kite Beach has a soft play area and plenty of space to run around. Last time we went, my little one spent hours collecting seashells while we relaxed with a coffee. Just don’t forget the sunscreen – that Dubai sun is no joke!
3. Explore Al Fahidi Historical District
For a change from the modern skyscrapers, take your kids to Al Fahidi, one of Dubai’s oldest neighbourhoods. It’s like stepping back in time with its narrow lanes, wind towers, and cute little cafés. My elder one had so many questions about the history, and it was nice to slow down and just explore at our own pace.
4. Dubai Aquarium (Cheap Option: Outside View is Free)
The Dubai Aquarium inside the mall is pricey, but here’s a hack—you can see the giant tank with sharks and stingrays for free from outside! My toddler was glued to the glass, watching the fish swim past. If you do want to go inside, check for online deals—sometimes you can get a family discount.
5. Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary
Who knew you could see flamingos in Dubai for free? This hidden gem is perfect if your kids love animals. There’s a viewing deck where you can watch flocks of flamingos and other birds. It’s a quiet, peaceful spot and a nice break from the city buzz.
6. The Hatta Heritage Village
The Hatta Heritage Village is a restored mountain village that showcases life in ancient times. Families can enjoy free entry and take a beautiful journey through the past, learning about traditional Emirati life and architecture. My older one loves history and pretend play and will absolutely love the hands-on experience of Dubai’s history.
7. Ride an Abra Across Dubai Creek (Only 1 AED)
One of the cheapest but most exciting things we did was hop on a traditional wooden abra boat across Dubai Creek. It costs just 1 AED per person, and the kids thought it was the best adventure ever. The ride is just around 5-7 minutes, and it’s a fun way to see the old and new city skyline from the water. Pro tip: Make sure your babies are tucked in a baby carrier as there may be a long queue leading up to the Abra ride, a lot of locals use it as a means of transport. Also avoid peak office hours (morning and late afternoon) as it gets busy.
8. Dubai Water Canal Walk
If you need an evening activity, take a stroll along the Dubai Water Canal. There’s a cool waterfall bridge that lights up at night, and it’s completely free. We let the kids bring their scooters, and they had a blast zooming along the pathway while we enjoyed the views.
9. Free Playgrounds & Parks
Dubai has some incredible parks, and many of them are free. Zabeel Park (small entry fee) has a huge playground, and there’s even a giant frame-shaped structure called the Dubai Frame nearby. We also loved the kids soft play and workshop area in the Times Square Centre on Sheikh Zayed Road.
10. Souk Markets (Free to Explore)
If you want a cultural experience, visit the souks (markets) in Old Dubai. The Spice Souk and Gold Souk are fun to walk through, even if you’re not buying anything. “We visited the Gold Souk just to browse, but my daughter was fascinated by the bright bangles and kept asking if she could ‘buy all the sparkles’ – I had to promise her a tiny souvenir to escape! She also had so much fun smelling the spices and guessing what they were. “
Just be prepared for the crowds though and the shopkeepers forever trying to get you to buy things. A polite ‘no, thanks’ works fine.
Other general Tips for Travelling with Young Kids in Dubai
- Best Time to Visit: The cooler months (November to March) are ideal for outdoor activities. Summers can be extremely hot, so plan accordingly.
- Public Transport Perks: The Dubai Metro is stroller-friendly, and kids under 5 travel free on public transport.
- Mall Play Areas: Many malls have free or low-cost indoor play areas, perfect for escaping the heat.
- Hydration is Key: Always carry a water bottle. Free water refill stations are available at some public spots, like Dubai Mall.
- Free Cultural Events: Check for free festivals, cultural performances, and kids’ activities at places like Expo City Dubai or Global Village (entry fee applies, but kids under 3 enter free).
Final Thoughts
Dubai doesn’t have to be expensive to be fun. Some of our best memories were made doing simple, free things like watching the fountains, running on the beach, and hopping on an abra ride. If you’re heading to Dubai with kids, add these activities to your list—your wallet (and your little ones) will thank you! Please comment below if you have any more tips to be added here :).
